Overview

Since its launch in 2005 with 4 instructors and 13 participants, the Basic Mountain Rescue Training, organized annually by the Nepal Mountaineering Instructors Association (NMIA), has been a cornerstone for those seeking to master safety and rescue operations in challenging mountain environments. This seven-day, 42-hour intensive program equips participants with essential skills to conduct safe and effective rescues in mountainous and high-altitude terrains. Held in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, the training combines theoretical instruction with hands-on practice in realistic scenarios, covering critical techniques such as fixed-line systems, glacier travel, crevasse rescue, self-rescue, and cliff rescue. Ideal for mountaineers, trekkers, guides, and outdoor enthusiasts with basic mountaineering experience, this program fosters confidence, safety, and preparedness for real-world rescue challenges.

Goals

  1. Equip participants with practical skills to perform basic mountain rescue operations confidently.
  2. Enhance understanding of risk management and safety protocols in mountain environments.
  3. Promote teamwork and effective communication during high-stress rescue scenarios.
