Overview
Since its inception in 2004 with 6 instructors and 24 participants, the Introductory Rock-Climbing Training has become the ideal starting point for newcomers to the sport. This immersive seven-day (42-hour) program offers a safe, supportive, and exciting environment to develop essential climbing skills. Conducted in the vibrant city of Kathmandu, Nepal, the course combines classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and real-world climbing on local rock faces. Participants gain confidence in climbing techniques, rope work, belaying, and safety practices—preparing them for independent climbing adventures and inspiring a lifelong passion for the sport.
Goals
- Equip participants with fundamental rock-climbing skills for safe and confident climbing.
- Develop a strong understanding of safety protocols and risk management.
- Encourage environmental stewardship and respect for natural climbing sites.
- Build a supportive community of climbers who learn from and encourage one another.
- Prepare participants for advanced climbing experiences, including top-rope and multi-pitch routes.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Identify and correctly use climbing equipment such as harnesses, carabiners, and belay devices.
- Tie and apply 10 essential climbing knots in practical situations.
- Set up and manage belay systems to ensure climber safety.
- Catch falls, lower climbers, and rappel using proper techniques.
- Select suitable climbing routes using guidebooks and assess potential risks.
- Communicate effectively with climbing partners using standard climbing commands.
- Apply fundamental movement techniques for efficient and confident climbing.
- Establish secure natural and artificial anchors for safe climbing systems.
